Upcoming Luncheon Meetings(Click on the Events Calendar link at the top of the page for the entire month's listing)
Wednesday, October 8
Speaker: K. Sue O’Shea, Professor of Cell & Developmental Biology, U-M Medical School
Topic: Stem Cells 101 – A Rotarians’ Introduction to Stem Cell Biology
Professor O’Shea’s presentation will focus on stem cells’ two unique characteristics: pluripotency (ability to form many cell types) and self-renewal (ability to divide & replace a stem cell). Learn about their sources, from early blastocyst (embryonic) and adult tissues (neural & muscle stem cells), and how various types of stem cells can be used for study of early human development, cell replacement therapies, and drug discovery.
Wednesday, October 15
Speaker: Dan Long, Music Education Consultant
Topic: History of Music in the Ann Arbor Public Schools
We see and hear fine examples of music education & performance in our local schools when the Pioneer and Huron Choirs serenade us each year. Learn more about these nationally recognized programs from a person who played a great part in them before his retirement. Want to know what was the first Ann Arbor High School fight song, or who were Harry Frieze, Calvin Cady, Albert Stanley, Juva Higbee, and William Champion? Dan Long will tell all in a trip through the historic halls of the AAPS Music Program.
Speaker Survey Results: The Program Committee initiated a very brief survey in early August seeking members’ opinions of lunchtime programs and speakers. The results are in. Members gave the program on Ann Arbor’s Economic Future the highest marks and applauded David Keren as the month’s best speaker. Thanks to all who shared their opinions.
